Button-fix has several uses, one of which is for van conversions and re-fits. Phil, Technical Manager for Button-fix says that, “Any panel on the wall or ceiling required to be removeable for service access can be fixed with a Type 1 Button-fix. Anything requiring very frequent removal or reconfiguring might be best using Type 1 Metal Button-fix for its strength and good detent life. Type 2 are useful for smaller push-on panels within cupboards or plinths but should not be used on ceiling panels. I would also consider the need to ensure that ceiling panels, in particular, are ‘locked’ or trapped in situ, to avoid detachment due to acceleration, deceleration or severe bumps”.
A classic example of Button-fix in use is for banquette seating in boats, yachts and ferries, but are also used by coachbuilders for horse boxes and other recreational vehicles.
A good case study is Tim Brotherton’s van. Tim used Button-fix to attach interior panels to the shell of the van. In this case it is an upholstered panel but commonly they are hard, plywood panels for decoration or protection. Panels need to be removable to access electrics or fittings such as water pumps that might be concealed behind. We have more examples of how customers have used Button-fix to create storage for tools and work materials within their vans.
For those transporting goods such as furniture, or using internal frames to carry or support motorcycles or other vehicles in vans, it is recommended that you use Button-fix Type 1 Metal rebated into plywood flooring. These fixes will not disengage even on the bumpiest roads.
